Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have defined and defied the playbook of royal courtship, relationship, and marriage. Despite their break with tradition, however, Meghan Markle’s wedding set is timeless and classic. Learn how to recreate her look using VRAI created diamonds. Her three-stone engagement ring features a Cushion center diamond, and is complemented by a plain gold wedding band, and channel-set Eternity band.

Meghan Markle’s set also celebrates heritage manufacturers. The engagement ring was manufactured by court jeweler Cleave & Company, while the wedding band is made of Welsh gold. Markle, however, doesn’t solely wear jewelry steeped in tradition. She is known for endorsing lab-grown diamonds, which she wears regularly in the form of earrings and everyday jewelry.

Keep reading for a historical and style analysis of Meghan Markle’s engagement ring and ring stack, and learn how to recreate it using VRAI created diamonds.

The Anatomy of Meghan Markle’s Engagement Ring

Meghan Markle’s engagement ring is a three-stone engagement ring with a Cushion center diamond and two Round side stones belonging to his late mother Diana’s collection. The original band is a yellow gold band. In 2019, it was upgraded to a white-gold or platinum pavé band.

The Center Diamond

The center diamond of Meghan Markle’s engagement ring is a Cushion diamond that comes from Botswana. Botswana is a country that has a special place in their heart – in the summer of 2016, they spent five days there in a tent. It was their third date, but it marked a turning point in their relationship.

The specs of the diamonds are unknown, but it is said to weigh around three carats. Cushion diamonds have large facets and rounded corners, and they suit vintage, vintage-inspired, and classic settings equally well. A Cushion diamond's large facets create the most fire (the rainbow-colored flashes of light) of all diamond shapes. The Side Diamonds

The side diamonds are Round diamonds whose estimated carat weight is just under one carat. They come from Princess Diana’s personal collection

The Band and the Setting

The original band is a plain, yellow-gold band, reportedly Meghan’s favorite metal, with a three-stone setting. The three-stone setting was popularized in the Georgian era (1830-37) and it retained its popularity throughout the Victorian era (1820-1914).

Who Made Meghan Markle’s Engagement Ring?

The engagement ring was manufactured by Cleave & Company based on Prince Harry’s design and creative input. Cleave & Company are court jewelers known for creating jewels, objet d’arts, and insignia. Insignia also include Orders, Decorations and Medals for Governments and Institutions across the globe in the Twenty First Century.

In 2008, HM The Queen granted Cleave a Royal Warrant as Manufacturers of Insignia and, in 2009, HRH The Prince of Wales granted a further Warrant as Medallists. “British traditions are held in high esteem, so whatever the climate, we’re British to the core – classic dark suit, white shirt and tie, polished black shoes and always bearing a properly printed business card,” Peter Scott, Cleave & Company told Country and Townhouse in 2020. “For all the curiosity among our overseas clients about Brexit, ultimately they want reassurance that we’ll remain the same.”

Meghan Markle’s Wedding Ring: Welsh Gold Band

For their May 2018 wedding, Meghan Markle wore a plain, yellow gold wedding band. The band was fashioned from Welsh gold, a metal that has been used by the British monarchy since the early 20th century, when Prince Edward was officially appointed Prince of Wales during a July 1911 official ceremony.

It should be noted that Welsh gold is chemically identical to gold found elsewhere, but it’s prized due to its provenance.

Meghan Markle’s Anniversary Ring: An Eternity Band

In 2019, after the birth of her and Harry’s first child, Meghan Markle began wearing an eternity band. This band is notable for featuring the family’s birthstones on its underside. This eternity band has a channel setting, where stones on the shank of the ring are set along a track between two walls of metal.

Engagement Ring Upgrade: From Plain to Micro-Pavé Band

Shortly after the couple’s first child Archie was born, Meghan started wearing what looked like an upgrade to her engagement ring. While the three-stone setting still sported the same three diamonds, the band appeared to be made of white gold or platinum encrusted with pavé-set diamonds.

How to Recreate the Look With VRAI Engagement and Bridal Rings

Meghan Markle’s wedding set and stack are timeless and classic, so it’s easy to take inspiration from her style for rings featuring VRAI created diamonds if that’s what you are attracted to.

For the engagement ring, simply choose a three-stone setting with a Cushion center stone, round side stones and either a yellow-gold or a white-gold/platinum pavé band. If you like the proportions of Meghan Markle’s ring, make sure that the side stones are 1/3 the size of the center diamond–her center diamond measures 3 carats, the side stones 0.95 each.

The wedding ring can be a yellow-gold domed band, such as VRAI’s style is called “The Round”. For the eternity ring, find a channel-set band with round diamonds. VRAI’s in-house style is called “The Devotion Band.”
